This weekend, seven teams from Europe will gather in Tartu to find out the best of the European Division of the Olympic Rugby Championship in 2018. 14-15. From July, Tartu will become the capital of Estonian rugby, and more than ten extremely exciting and eye-catching matches will be played at Tamme Stadium in two days.
“In the case of the Estonian team, it is a rather young team, which is strengthened by two experienced and strong veteran players. This is an important difference from the team that played in the same tournament in previous years – we used to have 10 older, more experienced, harder players and only a few younger ones. The plan now is to realize the courage of the youth that the world-class coaches have turned into rugby skills in recent months, maximally over the weekend, ”explains Rasmus Toompere, the manager of the Estonian Olympic rugby team.
Over two days, the teams from Estonia, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Iceland, Andorra and Belarus will find out the best of the 2nd division of the European Olympic Rugby in Tartu. “The strength and weakness of the Estonian team is one and the same – the youth of our players. Perhaps our weakness is the short preparation time and the lack of a couple of very important foreign players. However, our coaches, who are in a separate class, are a significant strength. However, I believe that the performance at the European Championships at home is palpable, and with the help of home walls, we could finish this year with a medal. I will not predict the color of the medal, ”added Toompere.
Olympic rugby is usually the younger and faster brother of the rugby played by fifteen. It is a game launched to qualify for the sports Olympics, as it is a faster and more attractive game for television. The seven-player Olympic rugby was scheduled for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics.
Specifically, seven players will run on the field in one place in the Olympic rugby, who will then find out the best in two seven-minute halves. The game is played on the original size court (max. 70X110 meters), with the original rugby ball and according to all the usual rules. The scoring system is the same: try 5 points, followed by a conversion of 2 points and a regular penalty of 3 points.
The European Rugby Championship in the 2nd division will take place at Tamme Stadium in Tartu this weekend, ie 14-15. July. On both days, the games will open in the stadium at 11 am.
