The Estonia Women’s rugby team will take to the field on Saturday, 16 May in the first-ever Women’s 15-a-side international development match, hosting Latvia at the Estonian National Cricket and Rugby Ground in Tiskre. Kick-off is at 14:00. Entry is free.
This is a historic moment for women’s rugby in Estonia. Although Estonian women have previously competed in Olympic rugby (7-a-side) tournaments, this is the first time the Women’s squad plays a full-format 15-a-side international.
Latvia’s women’s team is an experienced side at the international level, making this a real test for Estonia. A 22-player development squad is prepared and motivated to make their mark.

“This is an extremely important day for Estonian women’s rugby. Our players have worked incredibly hard for this moment and they deserve the opportunity to represent their country in rugby’s most traditional format. Latvia are a more experienced opponent, but our squad has shown outstanding commitment and team spirit in training. I ask them to do exactly what the men’s team did — give everything they have physically and mentally. Representing your country is the greatest honour.”
Smith is a professional coach with international experience who led the England Women’s team to the 2014 World Cup title.
Estonia’s women’s rugby growth has been remarkable: in 2022 Estonia competed at their first international 7s tournament with just 9 players. Today the programme has 45 active players.
